OK, I have another question. When looking up hitches, I see almost all that have the phrase "Will not fit w/ custom facia and no bumper".
What does this mean? I know what "no bumper" means, I guess, but what are they talking about here W/R/T "custom fascia"?
Also, I know my spare tire mount will be an issue, but since this is a local driving ONLY vehicle, I am probably going to take the tire off alltogether and just throw it in the bed when I make a trek beyond a few miles. Probably will just leave it back there, but the thing has been under there so long, it probably needs replacing anyway. Does anyone have any ideas on an alternate mounting spot for a spare tire?
When you take the bumper off, there is a ugly gap left under the tailgate. They make fiberglass roll pans to fill that in, but then the hitch will not fit unless you modify the roll pan.
For the spare, I drilled a hole in the inner top lip of the bed and installed a piece of all thread with two nuts. I then put a crook in the all thread so it went through the center of the spare tire wheel, and then made a large washer and tightened it up. This mounts the spare tire standing vertical against the inner side of the bed on the passenger side behind the cab. I can still haul 4x8 plywood like this.
OK, I need to apologize for my brain-fart! The boat does NOT weigh almost 4000 pounds, the camper I was asked to pull last year does. The boat weighs 2130, according to the sticker. Now, I am not sure if this is the weight without the motor, which cannot weigh more than 300-400 pounds or if this is the total weight. I say this because it was ordered with that particular motor from the dealer and was delivered with that motor. Even with the motor, we are still looking at less than 2500 pounds.
Regardless, it is still more that my bumber mount is rated, even though we're only talking 130 pounds. I seriously doubt it would break loose, but you never know. Since the boat is not mine, I doubt I would risk it and will more than likely find a receiver to mount on it and be done with it.
Littlejon, does the weight of the boat include the trailer ? if so you are right, it is not much over, but if not you might have a bit more there than you expect.
That's the big question. I am not sure what that weight represents. IF it includes the motor weight, then I probably wouldn't have much trouble, but I don't think I will risk it.
Like I said, I think I will just bite the bullet and buy a receiver and be done with it. It isn't like I won't be pulling other stuff anyway and this way I will be sure it will handle the load without risking leaving a boat and bumper at the bottom of the ramp!
I bought a reciever today only to find out it can't be mounted on my ride. Well, at least not right now it can't!
When I got the truck, one of the first things I had to do was replace most of the exhaust. Well, when they ran the pipes, they got it too close to the bottom of the frame right where the mount would go! I can't blame the guys who did it, as they are a good shop, but with nothing to go by what can you do?
Oh well, looks like I am stuck unless I want to try to get them to bend the pipe for me. Don't know if it is worth the trouble at this point. Perhaps when I get ready to replace the muffler again, I will put the reciever on at the same time.
Also, I went with a universal Reese reciever and, frankly, it didn't look like it would be easy to mount anyway. I may get them to order the custom fit one just to see if it will work, but I am not getting my hopes up.
I will second your arggghh! I have had this happen to me, and I sympathize with you.
The custom fit should fit easier though, I am not a big fan of the multi fit models at it always seems that something comes up.
Thinking outside the box for a second, I wonder if you could find a argent step bumper at the wreckers for less and change your rear bumper ? That would get you a 3500 lb rating (Ford OEM bumper) ?
You could buy a stout aftermarket bumper like a ranchhand http://www.ranchhand.com/backbumpers.htm
that is one option, but there are many more people that make bumpers. just do an internet search for bumpers
Yes, I guess the term "argent" is a fancy way of saying painted. Anyone want to correct me on this ? It might mean silver painted finish also I am thinking ?
Not real sure of the exact meaning, but I do know that it does not refer to any chrome plated items.
I thought that was what they were. Actually, a guy who lives across the street fromme has an old Ford pickup parked out front with one of those bumper on it. It looks to be about an 85-87 model, best I can tell. Maybe if he goes on vacation.....
k460 - I REALLY like those bumpers, but I bet they are pricey! I actually have a friend who could make me one to do what I want, but he might take a few months and I need this boat in the water now!
Ya, i didn't see any prices on the website, but im sure they are. i was trying to think of some stout bumpers but that was all I could think of. Im sure there are some cheaper ones out there though. If you are that close to the rating and you are not going very far, i would say that you could just use your bumber for a while and have your friend biuld you one and if you have any doubts, use that chain idea stated at the beginning of the thread. Them ratings have quite a bit of a saftey margin biult in, just wtch your toune wieght and I think that you would be fine for a while
