I am researching on building a engine for my offroad vechile. I know it is recommended on replacing the bolts and not reusing them. ie head, main, rod bolts. but those ARP bolts are mighty expensive. is there anything out ther that is good but not as pricey? I would not like to have mistery bolts holding my 400hp engine together @ 5000 rpms. Or is it ok to just reuse the bolts I pull out of the engine?
You should be okay reusing the head and main bolts. I've never had any problems doing it. However, the rod bolts are a differnt story. They need to be replaced when the rods are resized. Considering the function they perform it's amazing they even stay together. If engine is gonna see some rpm's a quality (ARP) set of rod bolts is highly reccommended. There are other brands that would do just fine too. Just don't try to re-use the old ones.
If it's an off-road application, I'd suggest you bite the bullet replace them all with ARP bolts. You're going to be subjecting the engine to unusual stress and it's not worth losing a few thousand dollars tied up in an engine for a couple of hundred in bolts. Cheap insurance.
Not only that but depending on what head bolts you have they maybe the torque once and forget kind. Meaning that they are tq to yeild. Just keep that in mind too.
