Installing the new engine... What ELSE should I do?
I'm about to install a shiny new engine in my '74 F-100, and want to know what ELSE I should do to the truck (besides pressure washing the engine compartment) while the engine is out?
I was thinking about maybe flushing the radiator and gas tank on my beast, but what else do you routinely do when installing a new engine?
Installing the new engine... What ELSE should I do?
Take the time to pull up and tie back all that 74 wiring. Most trucks that have been around that long look like rats have been at the wiring. Clean it up and stuff it in wire looms or re-tape it. It'll look a ton better.

I'd also replace all V-belts and hoses. While your at it, drain the tranny fluid...add a new filter and flush the converter if its an automatic. If it's a stick, replace the throwout bearing, check the flywheel for burn-marks (bluing) and resurface if needed, take a look at your clutch/pressure plate. There is nothing worse than rebuilding/replaceing an engine and then having to tear everything a part 10,000 miles down the road because you overlooked the rest of the drivetrain.

Depending on the color of your truck and what you like, buy two or three rattle cans and paint the engine bay. Personally I like black for an engine bay and have seen one done with hammered black that was beautiful. You don't have to be an expert to make this look good, but you'll be amazed at how much better it makes your shiny new engine look. You'll thank yourself later.
Installing the new engine... What ELSE should I do?
Here's what I did. I just rebuilt the engine in my supercab and intalled it a month or so ago.
1.Replace all belts
2.Replace all hoses (radiator and heater)
3.Replace water pump (if new engine doesn't have one)
4.Replace starter (don't want that to be bad after installing engine)
5.Replace flex plate (or flywheel for manual)
6.Replace front seal in auto trans (very common for it to leak after installing new engine)
7.Replace motor mounts and trans mount (if bad)
8.Fix all the wiring, put it in looms, tie it back
9.Wash out engine bay
10.Flush cooling system and have radiator professionally cleaned
11.Replace trans fluid and filter (install drain plug in pan to make the job easier next time)
These are some of the things I did. I can't remember everything I did, I know there is more to the list.
