My 97 psd is leaking diesel. It leaves about an 8 inch diameter wet circle on driveway every night. The spot is right where a rear main seal would leave a puddle. I pulled the plastic cover off and looked around,,,can't seem to locate a definite leak, but the valley is very moist,,, I was wondering if the psd's have a common area where they tend to leak? I saw what looked like the lift pump and can assume the leak is coming from somewhere at a low spot in the valley. The 1 1/2 turbo boot(orange) is covered with grime and appeared moist also. I am new to diesels so would greatly appreciate some advice pointing me in the right direction.
pretty much the leak can be fromt he lift pump, fuel lines or any other place of the fuel filter. best thing to do is to get some simple green or other good hard cleaner and low pressure garden hose and clean the whole engine off. You might need to clean it two or three times to get it really clean. Brake parts cleaner works very well too. then once its perfectly dry geta flash light and a mirrow and search high and low in the valley to see if you can see where the fuel is coming from.
I have heard that when someone doesn't drain the water out of the fuel filter canister as often as one should, this can cause rust leading to holes in the filter canister itself. Thus leaking fuel.
First thing I would do is after the truck sits all night, or better yet for a day and night, spin the top off the fuel filter canister and see if the fuel level around the filter has leaked down any. This should help you to narrow it down.
I read in a different post that 90% of fuel leaks on the '97s are from a vacuum switch on the driver side of the fuel filter cannister. That is exactly where I found my leak.
I have had fuel leaks from the weep hole on the fuel pump, Banjo bolt, switch on the fuel filter cannister and yesterday I had blown hi pressure fuel hose that feeds the lest side of the motor.
I still have not located the leak,,,,,,I have cleaned the motor and have been looking daily,,,,the valley stays wet and it leaves signs of a leak on the driveway everynight. I have been able to pin point the area of the leak to an area that is near the bottom of the fuel filter cannister or fuel pump area,,,, I have ruled out the cannister itself. I need to set some time aside on a weekend and remove cannister and check fuel pump. We are in the process of building our own house so this truck is being used all the time and hate to tear it apart and possible have it down for a few days.
