I'm looking at a 97 F250 with a 7.3. One thing I noticed that it had batteries on both sides of the engine bay. I knew that diesels had a different battery setup, but I didn't know it was set up this way. The battery on the drivers side was a typical looking car battery. The one on the passenger side was a deep cycle marine battery - is this usual?
All Ford diesels have 2 batteries. The only thing unusal is that the batteries are different. They are supposed to match CCA wise and the age of them too. If 1 goes bad you need to replace both. BTW: the Bigger the better. I have 1000 CCA batteries, it always starts in the winter

I have found 1000 cca batteries at Autozone - but not Sears (Diehard) or Napa. The AZ batteries are $69 before core. I don't know if they will take what this truck has as cores.
Yeah ditch the deep cycle and you probably need to get both at the same time. I got mine at Wally World but not the best quality. 65N I believe is the battery. The posts on the batteries Wally's are not quite as large as the factory ones but will work fine
I haven't bought AZ batteries, most 1000 CCA batteries are going to get the job done. I would get the longest, nationwide warranty available.
You can take the truck to AZ and they will load test the batteries. You will need to disconnect them from each other though. All you need to do is remove the driver side battery negative cable. Good time to have the charging system checked too.
