another front skid plate question

My 2001 Ranger, which has off-road pkg but did not come with front skid plate, has a plastic rectangular box-like structure immediately under the radiator. It is attached to the frame with a combination of hex-head screws and plastic push pins. As near as I can determine, this structure may have two functions--protect the bottom of the radiator and to direct incoming air through the radiator rather than under it.
Do 1999/2000 off-road pkg have this box? Was it used in place of or in combination with the front skid plate? Do 1999/2000 without off-road package have this plastic box?

Ed, FWIW my '98 4x4 "tow package" Ranger has the plastic box-like structure up front, too. My Ranger also has a front skid plate, along with an OEM tranny cooler.

Did the OEM tranny cooler and "plastic-box structure" come on non tow package Rangers? I have these items but seeing as I have no trailer hitch I do not believe I have the tow package. I do have the "4x4 Off Road" package.

Who tows with a 4x4 3.0 Ranger anyways??

My local Ford dealer advised that the technical term for the plastic box is "air deflector".<O</O

After Rockledge said he had both an air deflector and a front skid plate, I thought I should reinstall the air deflector. I took the skid plate off, put the deflector back on and then found that the skid plate will not fit over the air deflector. The deflector is too wide for the skid plate. I have a photo but can’t figure out how to post it.<O</O

The dealer parts guy said there were several air deflectors and they appeared to be engine specific. Also have a copy of the parts page but can’t post that either There are two part numbers for the 4.0 SOHC--one # fits 98-03 and a second fits 04-07. Neither number is listed as specifically used with front skid plate. The dealer had a 07 Ranger on his lot w/o off-road pkg, 4.0 L engine w/ 5 sp AT. It had the transmission oil cooler and the air deflector. I could not see any difference between that deflector and the one on my 2001.<O</O

I am wondering if there was another deflector used in 98-2000 that was compatible with front skid plate but is not in the current parts book. Another possibility is that the assembly worker used his pocketknife to modify a standard air deflector to make it fit inside the skid plate. I know that the old Corvette assembly guys frequently modified individual parts that wouldn’t fit right—maybe that is a common occurrence in every factory.<O</O

Since a replacement part is around $65, I want to see if I can get more information before I start whittling on the this one.

Can any 2006 or 2007 FX 4 Level II owners tell me what their air deflector looks like?

Hi Ed,

I must have had a brain lock when I said my '98 had a front skid plate. It does not. I don't believe the '98 or '99 models came with skid plates up front, but they did come with center skid plates and also one for the gas tank. I know this is true for 4WD models. I believe the '00 4x4s did come with a front skid plate.

I know at least one guy (WXboy) with a '99 4x4 who got an OEM front skid plate from Ford and put it on his Ranger. He posts a part # (YL5Z-5B018-AA) in this thread:

https://www.ford-trucks.com/forums/1...id-plates.html

Sorry about any confusion before. HTH.
