I am new to this forum so if it has already been posted my apologies. I read the FAQ section and there is a discussion about K&M filters and saving 1 to 3 mpg. Is this a reference to a cold air induction system or just using a different air filter? Thanks for any information.
This topic will be never ending. The use of an after market may or may not provide a dramatic increase in MPG and/or horsepower gain.
There are some drivers who still use paper type filters and are fine with them, as far as power gains.
I will switch to a K&N filter to gain alittle more air flow but I am not holding my breath on dramatic MPG/power gains. Right now I have a Fram toughguard and it actually is pretty good. Paper filters may catch more particles of dirt.
The reason I will switch is the fact that I do not have to buy anymore air filters. The K&N filter is about 50.00 while the Fram was about 20.00, you can do the math.
I do not see myself spending 300.00 on a FIPK for such small gains, some people feel that the filter change is good enough (like me).
The FIPK system draws hot air in from the engine compartment, not good.
Modifying the stock air intake to draw more air in from the outside is the trick.
There are current posts addressing this issue, check them out.
For me just buy the filter(this is my opinion) put your money somewhere else - exhaust system- maybe- It's your money and truck.
They make Filters and whole kits, although I would question anyone who claims they get any mileage increases with that alone, if they do they had a terribly dirty filter that they replaced. They do seem to give a bit better throttle response and a nice whistling sound.

I agree!...this is why you dont buy a FIPK form K and N..but rather a Outlaw or Volant Cold Air Intake where it keeps drawing from the fender but gives you better flow and a nicer filter than even K and N in my opinion!

10-4 on the MPG gains-or lack of- My intake mod IS alittle louder- throttle response is way better.
My MPG went down some because I drive faster just so I can hear the intake at wide open throttle along with the flowmaster drone!
I didn't see any large increase in fuel milage, but i do like the fact i don't have to buy new filter every year, I put the K&B on when i got my truck and have taken it off only once to clean and re-oil it in 6 years.
