Have a '93 F150 5.0 with the push button 4wd crap. It used to work, but now it won't shift into 4wd (and no lights on the dash to indicate 4wd). In the past when it was working, I could hear the relay behind the glovebox but that noise has slowly disappeared. This morning I could occasionally hear a very light click, but not now. I should have tried to locate the relay while it was making some noise, but now I'm not sure which part it is. Maybe the hot sun did the thing in? I have the kick panel and the glove box removed. Where is the relay specifically (or what part #)? Assuming that the relay is not the problem, what are the diagnosis steps for this issue? For the heck of it, I removed the t-case shift motor to see what position the t-case was in (2wd), but I didn't yet check for voltage at the shift motor (I suspect that it is not getting any).
first thing to do is check the fuse. if it is OK then get under there and tap on the side of the shifting mechanism a few times and try it again. most of the time it will start working again and will continue to work OK as long as you engage it every week or 2. dont use it for a while and you will need to do it again. if that doesn't work then you can take it off and disassemble it and replace the little nylon pegs with some vacuum hose

Fuse was OK when I check it yesterday. I tried tapping on the shift motor a little while I was under there, but couldn't get it to go. It had been a couple months since I had engaged the 4wd. Just checked it this morning while it was cooler (with the truck in the shade) and the thing works. Is the electronic shift module (that makes the noise at the back of the kick panel) temperature sensitive or will it not make a sound if the transfer case shift motor is not working?
no it wont shift untill the control confirms that the shifter is in the right position. so tapping on it got it to get the proper reading and it shifted. shift it in and out a few times to exercise it and also into low range. then do it every week and it will be OK.
I dont know if the shift module is any different than the one in my 91, but I experienced a similar issue. When I took the passenger kick panel off and hit a little button on the side it seemed to have reset the shift module and it went back to working. I also unplugged it from the harness as well to help it reset.
Thanks for the advice. When I had the shift motor off, I worked the shifter to 4H and 4L then back to 2H. I thought I had tested it afterwards, but maybe not. I'll make sure to use it more often in the future.
