Just opinion . . . For those that want all the noise and "LOOK AT ME", the cops and neighbors will too. I'd rather whiz past quiet and watch the dust fly behind me. ( If th 'skinny pedal' is on the floor, I don't want attention from John Law. I'm not but some of my friends say I could have been a shine runner. AND it's better to 'dump' Chebys when they think they're hot stuff < call it a "sleeper".
Straight pipes are ok. I've run my '70 with a 410 Merc, tri-power, big cam, 10.5-1 comp with headers and 2.5" straight pipes for years. I do have about 10" of 3.5" pipe at the tips. Not loud enough in the cab to damage hearing. If you keep the revs low when you see a cop they never notice...and mine's bright red with flames! I have a toploader 4 spd and my trick is to step on the clutch and coast by at idle whenever I see a cop. As with the previous poster, usually you won't get pulled over for noise unless you are doing something you shouldn't anyway.
when i bought my truck it had stright pipes out the passenger side with a 5 inch bell and it sounded good until we drove it to the gas station and we drove passed one of those metal guard rails and we got an instant head ache. but i have the 360 in mine so idk how a 302 will sound
I have a 302 2 barrel set up with dual Flowmasters on mine, & it's plenty loud. I couldn't imagine with no mufflers at all. But hey, it's your truck, if that floats your boat then go for it.
Hartski
thats pretty much how i feel about it. here in Tx i could run with just headers but it sounds like a dang crop duster airplane so i won't be doing that
If you like the rumble of staight pipes every now and then, why not install a set of exhaust cut-outs before a set of mufflers that you can open up or a set of SuperTrapps at the back end that will allow you to play with the baffels to "create" your own sound.
