I only see one place to unbolt it by the muffler/cat... Are the factory pipes 1 or 2 pieces?
The pipe is wrapped in the factory heat shielding. If I want to remove it and reuse it, I am going to have to remove the transmission cross member also.
I just realized you have a 6.0L Ex. I can only assume the turbo-downpipe-exhaust set up is basically the same as my 7.3L in that the pipe unbolts from the turbo and the rest of the exhaust, but lemme get my man @Toreador_Diesel to chime in to make sure.
Well I am trying to get the passenger side up pipe off! All hell has broken loose with the bolts from the manifold to the up pipe flange.
A video I watched the 2 guys took the down pipe out to have room to get to the bolts.
Sounds to me that you still have the stock downpipe. It comes out as one piece and one piece only. You would have to drop the transmission crossmember and support the trans for it to come out as one piece.
The aftermarket exhausts usually come in with two piece down pipes, so it's much easier.
While we are on this topic.....if I need to remove the exhaust manifold......wheel well out along with the down pipe?
Hopefully it doesn't come to that...
The downpipe coming out would make the job significantly easier. If you were planning on installing an exhaust on your truck, I'd just tell you to cut it off and be done.
If you have an impact, it'll make life so much easier. It's VERY risky using just hand tools to get those nuts and bolts off.
If you are able to get the manifold off, it would also make things a little easier, but like the V10 folks, you have to be careful not to break any of the bolts. Should you remove it, you should also consider installing a gasket since Ford didn't think it was important back then, but thinks it's paramount now.
