Yeh.. lemme add to his.. not glasspacks, but a good muffler. Say flowmaster or the likes. You'll regret a glasspack and the performance muffler will give you a better tone, more consistently, for a much longer time.
I have true duals with 12" glass backs on my 77 F100 with a 302 and stock 2 bbl. The glasspacks take out the harsh noises of straight pipes, and keep it sounding good. I have a long wheel base, and 22"x3.5" chrome tips. The tips make it deeper being 3.5" wide, and with the long wheel base, I don't have any loud noise on the inside of the cab unless I really get on it.
mines the same way, mbb. unless i get on it, theres not alot of noise in the cab. i got a 67 f-250 w/ 360 with stock manifolds, 28'' cherry bombs, and 2'' pipe stickin out the sides in front of the wheels.
turns heads though, its not too loud, it just sounds good.
my 71 f-100 w/ 351W i really like the sound of too. long headers, 2.5 inch tubing, then some cheap mufflers all the way back infront of the axle. even though theyre cheap, they still allow for some good sound.
I regret them because there's only a certain point where they sound good, then don't. I had duals before I swapped out the old 360 that sounded pretty decent for the time, then the clutch went out and it sat for two years. When I started it to pull it into the garage to pull the engine, it was much louder than I ever remembered it.
With that set and the one i have now, both have seen about 6000 -7000 miles out of just me driving it, and they sounded better newer. Now I just wish I had kept the old muffler that was in the 68 the 240 came from for a quieter ride. Worst 30 bucks I ever spent on the truck.
I would say at the very least, if you're going to run duals with no mufflers, run a nice big X pipe to balance out the sound. It mellows out the overall tone a lot more. If I were you, I'd go with a big Flowmaster 50 (2 inlet, 2 outlet).
straight pipes are way too loud, but glasspacks just arent loud enough.
i've got a 360 4 barrel with hooker headers, cherry bombs, and 2" pipes out the sides. and i wish they were just a little bit louder. will 2 1/2" pipes make it louder? or does moving the glasspacks closer to the headers do anything? mine are sortof in the middle. will 2 1/2" pipes reduce more backpressure? or is 2" just fine?
I'm going to guess you haven't had the glasspacks long? If not, put several thousand miles through them and they'll gain a lot of tone. I don't know if larger exhaust would make much of a difference.. on a 360, I don't even know if it would be very necessary to go bigger.

Yeah after a while glasspacks blow out and increase in sound moving them closer to the headers might make it louder but if you just run off the glasspacks it should be fairly loud no pipe going from the packs to the back of the truck
I always hear bigger the pipe the louder it will be
As for performance and not just volume, a quality muffler like a Flowmaster or similar will get the most out of your exhaust....Correct pipe sizing and mufflers will actually improve the performance over just plain old loud straight pipes.... Seen the chassis dyno results to prove it. One of my old Mavericks actually made more horsepower with the exhaust then with open headers!!! Though a very small amount, about 5 horse difference, had to of been the x pipe helping with the power.... I guess it all depends on whether you want just loud, or something that actually helps the truck perform....
so should i get bigger pipes? they are 2" at the moment. i was thinking of 2 1/2" becausee i now have a 4 barrel carb, performer intake manifold, camshaft, and a dui performance distributor. are the 2" holding me back?
Danger Dave - What size were the pipes to begin with ? Larger pipes may help the top end but tooo large will drop the torque/bottom end. Larger pipes will deepen the tone a bit and LARGE tips will deepen the tone more. If you just want LOUD go with short pipes exit under the cab. Then you/passengers will have to crank the tunes to hear them and the "patrol" will notice you too. Today, I saw/heard a 'tuner' that had a large pipe exit under the pass. door. The jerk sounded and was driving like a race car in a BIG HURRY - in downtown/campus traffic. (think Cop Magnet)
my exhaust stock was just manifolds feeding into a y and then to just one pipe. but i removed all that and just have headers now with cherrybombs and 2" pipes out the sides infront of the rear tires. true dual. i'm thinkin about swapping out to 3"
