Hello all, I just ordered a remanufactured 400 for my 77 F-250 4x4 and came across this website which seems to be full of very knowledgable people. The engine that I ordered is stock except for an RV cam. I have been surfing this site and have seen alot about " straight up timing ". My question is, once I receive my engine, if the cam is retarded 4 degrees, should I re-set it at 0 degrees? I have removed most of the smog crap on the engine and will be putting a Edelbrock performer 4-barrel carb and intake on at a later date. As for now will be installing the factory 2 barrel carb.
the only way to know where your intake center line is set at is to degree the cam and check your findings against the manufacturer specs.
the term "straight up" refers to the intake lobe being centered when the crank is at a specific reference point in degrees. if the intake lobe is not centered at the given degree reference point, it is either advanced or retarded. the degree wheel and pointer will tell you exactly how much, then it's up to you to make an adjustment or not.
