Some times I think I have heard a low whining from the back of my 1991 F-250.
Now I am not wondering anymore! Today it started to whine a lot louder. And now it is whining, rumbling and my truck vibrates. I think it is from my rear end. First I thought transmisssion, but it shifts fine through all gears.
After I stopped, I crawled under thr truck. I found that where the axle is going into the differential, it was warmer then it was at the diff.cover. Does this sound like an problem with my differential?
I am a little stuck on this one, so I would be happy for some thougts from you folkes "over there"!
I'm not sure if the heat difference means a whole lot, the carrier is bolted to the housing, so there will be a difference in temterature compared to the cover, which will lose heat more quickly being made of sheet metal.
I would double check the drive shaft U joints. They can make all sorts of crazy sounds and vibrations when they quit. Even if they look good, I would drop the shaft and check for stiffness or tightness on a bench.
For the differential, the easiest thing to do is pop the pan and drain into a clean container and check th oil for metalic debries. The carrier bearings are also fairly easy to see with the cover off. A good light and small mirror will come in handy.
Check the nut on the pinion shaft, they are known to work loose.
The yoke going into the differential will seem loose on the pinion shaft.
That can cause a rather strange vibration and sound.
Could also be a wheel bearing, inner or outer on either side.
U joints can also seem like the rear axle is at fault noise wise.
Took down the driveshaft today and changed the U joint at the rear. Have been driving it for a mile, and everything seems ok. It isn`t always as it seems at first. Luckily!
Have a nice day!
