engine swaps
I have a 1988 ranger 4x4 with the 2.9L and a five speed manual. how hard would it be to take a 4.0 out of a 1993 explorer and put in it? can i still use the same tranny because i dont like the auto tranny that is in the explorer.

There is only 1 problem - bellhousing replacement. 2.8-2.9 Engines have the same bolt pattern with 4.0 OHV ore 4.0 SOHC engines. I used to install 4.0 SOHC to Ford Scorpio and to install Scorpio Starter I had to use Scorpio flightwheel (not only flightwheel, but pressure plate and clutch disk). 4.0 Ranger starter does not fit Scorpio tranny, but people say that easily fits 2.9 Ranger trannies.
2.8 and 2.9 Ranger/aero/bronco trannies have 2 threaded bolt holes (casting GT 7A834 AA)
4.0 bellhousing looks like 2.9 but heve 8mm bolt holding pump on, 2.9 bellhousing have 6mm bolts (GT 7A834 bc).
so everething is possible.

so the 4.0 does bolt up to the 5 speed but the bolts that hold the starter on are Diffeent? i would assume i would have to get a clutch and pressure plate to fit the 4.0. and one more question how hard is hooking up all the wiring from the other engine. will all the instuments hook up the same?
