I have the block out getting prepped now and i should have it back by next tuesday. One question i have is how much ring gap should i run on a normally aspirated engine (file to Fit)? i want to run a tight long lasting engine. One guy was telling me to run .020 on the top ring and even more on the second. The rings that came in the kit say .016 top and .018 on the second. my chilton ford book says .010 on top and .018 on the second. if i run them a little tight how much would they be after they wear into the cyllinders?? I want the least amount of blow by as posible, but still run safe.
Typically, it's .004 per inch of bore for the top ring, or .016. I go a couple thou bigger on the second. NEVER go LESS. Hopefully, you let the machine shop know what type rings you're using ( plain ductile iron, moly, chrome, etc.) as this will determine final hone finish of the bores. If not finished correctly, you can end up with rings that will never seat, or greatly accelerated ring wear. A word of warning if you're using Keith Black pistons: The top ring land is closer to the top of the piston, which means it tends to run hotter than the same area of most other brands. Therefore, the gaps have to be bigger, or you risk end-butting. Another warning: If you plan on spraying this motor, I don't recommend KB pistons for the same reason- if you run on the edge of detonation (which is normal with spray anyway), you'll lift those top lands in nothing flat. It can be done, but you have to be VERY careful with your tune to be sure not to run lean (experience speaking ).
DO NOT run your gaps smaller than mfgr. recommendation.
