400 piston rings?
Is there a web site that showes some good instructions on how the rings go on the piston. This is my first auto rebuild and the whole oil rings is confusing me. The rings are hastings and they say you cant put iron rings on without a special tool. Im not sure if there iron or not. The directions with the rings are very vague. One ring is a angled on one side and i take it that this one goes in the top groove on the piston. Then there is a ring that is normal and then the oil rings. I just dont want to screw up a simple step. Im probably thinking to much into it.
Thanks again for your knowledge guys, Jaret

Hey Jeret:
Better to ask a stupid question and get the answer then not an screw up a set of rings.
OK Here's how I do rings .
I start out with the oil rings first.
Install the crinkle looking ring first then slid one of the thin rings to the botton of the crinkle ring and work it into the groove
Slid it down like a slinky and when you got both rings inplace move the joint spacing 180 Dreg. of each other,
Now I know they say you can put iron rings on without
a special tool. But spend the 3 buck at sears for a ring expander pliers... then 2nd ring next dot side up, and then the 1st ring dot side up.
When installing the piston into the block make sure no two end gaps line up.I run each ring 180 dreg's of each other with the first two ring running up and down to the pin, and the oil rings 180 Dreg's with the pin.
Easy enough right ..
