basic questions

Hey all,
my girlfriend just got an 87 bronco II 4wd, auto trans, 4 banger. I have no experience with these at all. I was wondering how the transmissions were, about what mileage it would get and how hard is it to drop the gas tank if i wanted to put a new unit in it. Along with the last part if her gas gauge doesnt work what are the odds its the gauge itself or the unit in the tank. if i remember anything else i was wondering ill edit this. thanks

edit: the ac makes alot of noise. in mine it was the blower fan needed to be oiled. would it be the same for this. it blows cold

the fuel tank is not too bad to drop, just a time consuming job.more than likely all yo need is the fuel sending unit..but whilke you have tank out might as well replace the fuel pump. as for the a/c the noise could either be the clutch or the compressor is noisy due to age. as for the fuel mileage i would think you should get at least 17-20 mpg being an automatic tranny...hope this helps!

Must be a 4-cylinder 2.3L turbo diesel, as that is the only 4-cylinder engine offered in 1987 (and I thought those were mainly Canadian models?). I'm not sure if the fuel tanks are the same as the 2.9L gas models, but if they are in the same location, they aren't that difficult to drop, but I recommend either driving as much fuel out of it as possible or siphoning it out completely, to make it less cumbersome. Usually, if the fuel gauge is inoperative, it's either the in-tank sending unit or somewhere in the wiring between the gauge and the in-tank unit. The rare culprit is the instrumentation voltage regulator, but that affects ALL the gauges. By A/C making a lot of noise, do you mean fan noise? If it's just the fan, sounds like the impeller may be loose (or bent) or the motor is wearing out. If I remember right, the fan motors are sealed bearing, or bushings, and oiling only does so much for so long. Hope this helps

its a 6 cylinder then. I havent seen it yet so I went with what she said. definatly not a diesel. as for the ac im pretty sure its the fan because the clutch and compressor are relatively new. thanks alot for the help. also I have read that it could be a 20 or 23 gallon tank. any thoughts?

If your blower fan is making the noise, you might also check for leaves or debris in
heater ducts. You can get at them by removing the motor and impeller on the firewall
near the passenger side fender in the engine compartment. debris also collects around
the heater core. You can sometimes see stuff coming out of the lowest passenger side heater vent below the core.

its a 23 gallon. found out the hard way when she calls at midnight to say shes on the side of the interstate on her way home. the guy she bought it from said he had put gas in it and he would usually go 250 miles and then fill it back up. he didnt tell her he only put in a little gas. another question that i have now is how are the transmissions in these. its an auto. I have read that some are foreign?

Yep, probably an A4LD. Now, if it has been previously rebuilt and it's a quality rebuild and it's well-maintained, it should work well for you. If it has never been rebuilt and is the original transmission and has been well-maintained, you shouldn't have issues. The A4LD can be fairly tempermental if not maintained or abused, though. The usual problem with them that happens first is the overdrive starts to not want to work, and is usually the solenoid.

unlike the rest of you, I have not had good luck with the A4ld, as mine is on its second rebuild, even with a quality transmission cooler (both rebuilds were at different shops)
