I have a '99 F-250 superduty with about 3/4 of a million miles on it. I just started to have this problem where when I shift into first or reverse the truck kind of stutters into the shift, it's not smooth at all, and is exacerbated by things like pulling a load, going up a hill, and cold weather.
My guess is that something in the clutch assembly is warped and not contacting smoothly, does this sound like it makes sense?
If so, is there a guide that I could find that would tell me how much work is involved changing the clutch out myself? I did a search for it but didn't find anything yet...maybe I just need practice with the search button.
I have a '99 SD, low miles compared to yours. Only a quarter million! :-)
I need a new clutch, mostly due to a very noisy throwout bearing. I've gotten quotes from $750 - $1,200 for a shop to do the clutch, including all new LUK clutch parts and machining the flywheel.
I've also looked at changing it myself, and you can find pretty detailed insructions in a $20 Chiltons super-duty manual available at pretty much any auto parts store. It doesn't look like any particular step is difficult, but it does look like lots of work.
Note that this is for a 4x4. 2WD should be significantly less expensive and easier, without the transfer case and front driveshaft.
For your problem, is the studder when you begin to engage the clutch? If so, i would agree it is a clutch issue.
Is it a solid grind or just a bump? I assume you've checked the fluid in your clutch reservoir. If it's a hard grind you may have something bent. If it just kind of bumps it could be the clutch going. I had mine replaced at 212,000 on my 2wd 02, but it was the same price range pfb talked about.
I let a shop do mine since this transmission looks a lot heavier than the 3 speed on my old 64 I used to change.
i had a '99 with a manual before my current truck. i replaced the clutch myself at about 120,000 miles due to the throw out bearing. the squelling was driving me nuts. the parts ran about $650 (if memory serves correctly) including resurfacing the flywheel. it was a straight forward job. I had never done a clutch before, and was a bit aprehensive to tackle it. really not bad though. the clutch plates were in excellent shape at that point, but figured if i was in there i may as well do the whole job and not have to worry about it down the road.
