clutch problems...???

Hey everyone! My buddy called my today and told me his 99 F150 was having some problems. He said the clutch peddle was really loose, and that it didnt start having some pressure until it was almost to the floor. He also said that it was nearly impossible to get it into gear. When he tried to shift it just wouldnt go smoothly. what can this be? the clutch, throw out bearing, both??? Please give me some help so that i can get back to him. Also if it is the clutch, how much is he looking at for buying a new clutch.
thanks Gabriel

It sounds like your slave cylinder is bad mine went out at 39,000 miles there seems to be a real problem with this. It is a very costly repair because the tranny has to be pulled. The part is about 80.00 bucks

Should need anything too special. It rides on the jackshaft like a throwout bearing. Have him check the fluid in the clutch master cyl. and if it is low, check the bellhousing area for brake fluid. There should be some signs of a leak. If it has a lot of miles on it, I would go ahead and put a new clutch in it while it's apart.
