I'd still buy it at a 5K option. When I was regularly commuting I was putting 30K a year. 15 MPG vs 25 MPG is a big difference. Of course we can only assume fuel mileage on the new diesel. But my old 96 7.3L weighing it at a slight 7500 lbs + gets about 20. and my uncle's 04 6.0L 4x4 on 37's gets over 20. the F150 with a smaller CI diesel SHOULD get 25 on the highway.
The 6.2L V-8 gasser and the 4.4L Diesel sounds good, but I think I would stick to the 5.4L v-8 until those new motors work out all of their bugs. Who knows how long they will last and how reliable they will be. I hope that they will work out for the next f-150s and not give them any issues like the 6.0L in the Super Duties seem to have done.
Id want the boss, with a revised ignition/fuel delivery sytem to cut out 2 of the cylinders while not using the power and then cuts in when you need to stomp a yota or hemi.
I have a 3V 5.4L now and it works great. Really don't need the diesel or Boss, but if I was choosing a new truck I'd have to go with the Boss. Nothing against diesels, just prefer a gasser. With the estimated 400Hp and 400+ Lb.Ft. of TQ, I wouldn't need any more. Only carry some jet skis with my current 150, so the diesel, except for the MPG's really doesn't excite me too much.
Of course like with my current 150, it'd have to be at least the 3rd model year before I purchased. Like to let Ford and others work out the bugs before I try any new vehicle.
I think for me the deciding factor will be if I buy a second mustang as a money pit when i'm done paying off the current stang... if i buy another stang, it'll be either keep the 04 till the wheels fall off, or trade it in on a newer 6.2. I'm not longing for speed in a truck, and while the 5.4 is no slouch, the 6.2 sounds like it's ford's way of finally getting the mod motor's flaws fixed... the small bore that shrouds the valves, that in turn cuts off top end power on mustangs, and requires a long *** stroke for trucks to make all that low end... if the 6.2 is dissapointing in price/performance ratio over the 5.4 (which it probably isn't knowing ford), i'll probably go to a V10 F250 instead... What can I say, I love my gas guzzlers

I'm curious to see if/when this 6.2L comes out, if they don't end up fazing out the V10. At least rumor has the Boss pushing similar HP/TQ figures if not higher in some areas. What % of Super Duty owners actually purchase the 6.8L in comparison to the 5.4L & PSD? Personally I like the V10, but the Boss will be a lot more advanced and should provide better MPG's for Fords CAFE rating.
I wish I had kept my '03 F350 Screw 4x4 DRW 7.3l. Since my time machine STILL doesn't work (problem with the flux capacitor), I'm looking forward to an American 1/2-ton under diesel power.
I drove the Toyo Hi-Lux in Afghanistan (man. trans, right-hand drive, 120k miles) and it was just a 1/4-ton that we BEAT on. When they swapped to gassers (from Rick Hendrick back in USA), we started having a lot of problems with them.
This reminds me of the sentiment in owning an FLTHC Harley: once you've driven one, you can never go back to the smaller bikes. Once you've owned a diesel, you just can't drive anything else.
I would go for the diesel as it should get a better mpg rating and better torque. I know right now that unless someone buys it for me my next truck will have at least 75k on the odo and be if not a V6 of some foreign make :-( or what I know to be a tried and true 4.9 or 7.3. Those are the only two engines I will currently look for in a truck. Ford should just ditch the current V6 and redo the old I6.
