hey guys when you are restoring a truck and switch cabs what vintag does everyone go by to make it leagle?
thanks,
Jimmy
PS my 78 i re did i re installed the vintag on the door is that the only one they really look at? my 78 i never put the one back on the cab.
thanks again!
Most places ( DMV, police, etc. ) check the tag on the dash - left side and sometimes match it w/ the door tag. That tag can be seen from the outside of the vehicle, even if it's locked up. That tag is the hardest to replace or alter - with the windshield in place.
ok my question is where is the vin number on the frame? Also is it a tag or stamped into the frame?
thanks,
Jimmy
ps my parts truck is all orignal with title but the door vintag is missing(they put aftermarket doors on the truck and forgot to put the tag on the aftermarket doors.) the tag was still on center of the cowel and also the sticker is still on the cab saying the vin number. where is th eone on the frame?
thanks,
jimmy
ps if i ever restored my parts truck (its not into bad fo shape thats why i wanna fix it up) is there going to be big issues trying to get it leagleon the road cause the door vin is missing?
ok guys well i looked at my parts truck. i cannot find any stampings in the frame anywhere. i looked all over the thing cannot find it anywhere. Also i noticed somone changed the doors on it they are aftermarket doors. i cannot find the door vintag anywhere.
thanks,
Jimmy
Oftentimes, it's buried in grease and rust. You need a wire brush and clean the whole TOP rail, all the way from the bumper opening to under the cab. Locations aren't precise on every truck.
On mine, I found two places. The one where Dennis says and the other further back on the passenger side framerail under the cab. Trouble is, you need the cab off to see it. You have to really clean the frame rail and then use some chalk to see if you can bring it out. Mine was extremely hard to read because of surface rust I blasted off. I couldn't make it out, but when I compared it to the door tags I had, I could read most of the numbers/letters to make sure it matched.
ok if you loose the door vintag but have the cab sticker and the cowel tag on (cant ake out any of the numbers on frame) you think they will inspect it?
My son bought this really clean 73 4X4 that had been sitting in a backyard for seven years without being registered. I rented a car trailer and we went over and loaded it up and took it home. We wire brushed the frame and spayed paint over the numbers and then wiped off the paint exposing the vin#. When we took it to the DMV to get it registered the guy just walked out opened the door and wrote down the vin#. We asked about the frame number and he said he wasn't interested in the frame number. So I guess it just depends on the individual inspector.
This was the Victorville, CA DMV office
