it all depends on the DMV for your state and what they want. we put a 64 on a 78 frame and DMV made a new tag for it that they put in the door frame. We did have the titles for both thrucks which might have helped
The frame VIN's can't really be obviously seen during inspection, and most inspectors probably don't even know they exist and if they do, won't be able to find them. If you have a matching title with a VIN tag or sticker, that's what you can use. In my case, I don't have a title to my rebuilder. I do have the Door tags and actual VIN #, but since I don't have a title, I will most likely have to get an "assembled vehicle" title. I just need some receipts showing some of the major parts I bought and a title (doesn't make any difference) of any vehicle I used parts off. Whether it be a tranny, motor, doors, fenders, etc., any major component will work. It's just to show that the vehicle is being built ground up. The DMV will then need it inspected by my local sherrif and then they will issue me a new VIN specific for the vehicle. Hopefully, I can get them to just use my actual VIN for the new one. They told me it's quite a process to get done.
I see. well my 78 f-250 i have. pretty soon i will have to replace the frame on it (right now all vintags match) can i get by changing frames without another title or will i have to have 2 titles for the truck?
thanks,
jimmy

For many years, the Kelley Blue Book listed where "hidden" VIN's could be found on all vehicles. These books weren't available to the general public.
You should be able to assign this Truck you are building with your OWN or an DMV issued VIN# as long as they can be shown the Vin's of chassis that have used to build it.
You can use an 11 digit Vin with your own last 6 digits.
If you guys had ever seen the way the VIN got stamped on the frame in the old days you would understand the location variations...
The VIN is ALWAYS on the right hand side of the frame on top. If there are any questions on the VIN for a vehicle they go by the frame number. Assembled vehicles are different and are given a generic VIN number. Always protect the VIN number when blasting a frame.
