PSD owner wanna be....needs help

Looking at a '00 F-350 SRW SuperCab 4x4, with auto and 99K miles. All stock drivetrain, minus muffler, with 3" lift and 35" tires. The truck is super clean, starts right up and idles smooth. It is an absolute dog from a dead stop and seems underpowered throughout most throttle settings and speeds. I have gone back and forth on a couple other forums with "it's too much tire for the stock 3.73 gears" to "the lack of the muffler is killing your bottom end" to "just throw a chip in it" to "junk the stock air-box and replace the fuel filter".....

Anyone care to take a stab at it here? I was digging the turbo lag theory due to muffler delete, but several have chimed in that that can't be.

Any help or ideas would be great.

All I can say is those theories are total crap. I have 35" tires and a 4" lift, 3.73 gears, no muffler, 4" straight pipe, and while I'm no Kris, my truck is still pretty dang quick and I have no issues with power. The motor and gearing is more than enough to handle those tires - to be honest these PSD's don't even really notice the bigger meats except maybe in the MPG department. And running no muffler? If anything, that will help your power, because the motor is breathing easier.

One thing you might explore...how long has that truck been sitting? It's possible it has old diesel in it, and might be the reason it's so doggish. When I bought mine it had been sitting for about 8 months, with the same tank of diesel in it. I drove it for a week and went and filled up and came out of that gas station sideways in a solid cloud of smoke...the rubber I laid out on that blacktop is still there....it had just been running on rotten diesel, and running well considering. I changed the fuel filter and it ran even better.

Also check and make sure the air filter isn't clogged.

Thanks for the quick replies! I never thought about "old diesel", but I know the truck has been on the lot for about 6-8 weeks. It has no smoke when running, it just feels like a Jeep YJ I had once with 3.55 gears and 35's...way too tall. But I figured the PSD would lug those around no problem. Thanks again for the ideas.

I once had a lifted Toyota 22R that couldn't get out of its OWN way. The 7.3 might not be the fastest kid on the block but is a very powerful motor when running correctly. That truck you're looking at should be able to run those big tires and pull a 7,000 lb load and shrug it off like no big deal.

If you're really particular, get a sample of the oil and send it to get tested. If the truck is having any problems at all, an analysis will tell you.

I would do a quick check foe any boost leaks or any exhaust leaks. I had a good exhaust leak and i'll tell my truck ran like a real dog i couldnt beleive the differance after i fixed it.
