I am looking for a fairly loud muffler for a 1997 f250 with a 460 ci engine and only 15,000 miles on it. I am looking for an exact fit to exit out behind the passinger rear tire. Mine has two pipes coming out of the muffler but I could settle for one as long as every thing fit in the stock mounts---Thanks for your help
I think your truck is identical to mine in terms of exhaust system. It should have the same massive single converter with an oval shaped inlet and single 2-1/2" outlet. If you want it fairly loud, you're going to have to take the converter out. I installed a Cherry Bomb Pro chambered muffler on mine and it was only slightly louder than the stock muffler. In fact, my wife didn't even notice I did it! A cheap glasspack may be louder than the chambered design, but the large factory cat really quiets the exhaust. If I had to do it again, I would have just forgot the muffler and ran a 2-1/2" or 3" straight pipe right out of the cat with a 45 or 90 bend to exit in front of the rear wheel. As of now, I plan on making a custom pipe to replace the cat......when it warms up this spring! Also, if your tail pipes are like mine, they're only 2" and they are on 3" centers where they are welded into the factory muffler. Most all performance mufflers have a wider spread on the outlet centers, which really messes up the alignment of the tailpipe tips. I kept mine because they were brand new, but it was a major pain. With a 460, I would go with an aftermarket cat-back dual system with 2-1/2" pipe minimum or a single 3". Summit has a pretty good kits for not much money.
Jones Exhaust makes a nice affordable replacement for the factory unit that will come as close as anything. Walker also makes a SoundFX exact replacement, but both will be quiet with the factory cat. I would strongly urge you go with an aftermarket cat-back!
I would definitely keep the two stock tail pipes. There are alot of single in dual out mufflers. I would use a mic / caliper to measure the pipes. I have Magnaflow as well and really like it. I a larger case muffler. I think its 24 inches long. You may have to add to or shorten the head pipe a little for any muffler you switch to. If you want it louder then get a glasspack with a Y on it, which is often called a torpedo pack. Stay away from chambered mufflers, they drone.
