Question why 1999-2003 better

i have had my truck about a month now. it looks and runs like new, low miles for a 00 this is the reason i bought it.
i friend came over to look at it, he said these years had the best motors.
just wondering the difference in these and other years?
he said he didn't know why he had just been told this by someone.

thanks for any answers

At least you asked in the 7.3L forum...lol....If you ask most Ford techs they say that the 6.0L is one of the worst Engines to work on and then again they say the samething about the 7.3L. Poeple who own the 6.0 usually love them unless they got one of the troubled ones, same goes for the 7.3 but by 2000 the 7.3 had a pretty good record going for reliablility. Thats all I am going to chime in cause there are plenty of other opinions out there and I dont want to start a 7.3L vs. 6.0L war lol.

jvoight said it well. I'll add just a few small details, but will take the same approach that jvoight took. 2003 was the last year that the 7.3 was put into the PSD lineup (and Excursion lineup, as well). 2003 was also the first year for the 6.0L engines, and they have a not so stellar reputation. I know some folks who have had excellent experience with the later model 6.0L engines (from 2005-2007).

Basically, though, the 7.3 was at its most mature point in marketing and sales in the 2000-2003 year range.

You will also want to know that year they had the forged rods and not the PMRs. Witch means your bottam end will hold alot more ponys then my 02 with the crappy weak PMRs ( powderd metal rods ) That could also be why your friend said its the better motor. I say all the 7.3 are the BETTER motor over the 6.0.

Lets just say the 6.0 had lots of problems causing it not to run while the 7.3 would keep running running and running.

Okay, I feel compelled to chime in as well. PMRs aren't "Crappy", they're just not as strong as the forged. 400HP is the common limit discussed here for PMRs. Even the stock forged rods have their limits, but in either case, by the time you get to the 400 or 500 HP range, there are a lot of other things you need to do to the engine anyway. A set of rods is just one more thing on the list of "To-Dos" for the Super-Stroker. hhmmm... Anyone used that term yet? I may have to copyright that one... I forsee "SuperStroker" or "SuperStroked" chrome badges in my future...

On the 6.0 subject, I have to believe that most of the bad ones must've been found by now. There were injector & gasket issues (and I'm sure a couple other things I can't think of right now -- turbo?) with the 03 & 04s, but I'm relatively sure that these things were fixed in the 05s & up. A buddy of mine has an 05 King Ranch F350 DRW that is just a bad-*** machine...
