How does the speedo cable come off of the cluster?I'm trying to get it out so I can clean the connections around the little light bulbs and clean it up as well.I have taken the two 1/4" bolts loose that are on the top and bottom but I still cannot get it out and I don't want to break anything. There is a plastic clip that hold the cable to the back of the gage cluster. After you remove the small screws holding in the cluster you can usually pull in forward just enough to reach back there and pop the clip off.
I don't really remember how I got it loose. If you can't figure it out let me know and I'll look at the project truck in the garage and try to figure out how I did it.
Here is how you do it:
Press the flat side of the vinyl connector, but don't 'squeeze' the connector on both sides: It must be pressed on just one side, or you will be fighting a while. It will come off real slick when you tug the cable. I have done quite a few of these. One young fella with his girlfriend asked me for a hacksaw once in the junkyard... I asked him what he was cutting, out of curiosity: "Oh, just trying to get the speedo cable off an instrument cluster". I was horrified, and offered to go show him how. He had apparently been trying for an hour to get it off, and got desperate. I jumped into the car and reached back behind the cluster. "Click." Off it came.
It is not always easy to release connectors, especially when you have to go by feel alone. I doubt I will ever forget this procedure: My first time out was not pleasant, but I am the type of person to get to the bottom of a problem and find a solution, instead of finding a bigger hammer or a saw. I don't like to damage other parts from a Ford when pulling something I need.
