I was planning to install the Autolite double platinum OE DIS plugs but I've run into a problem:
The Autolite website says part number APP104 is correct for my truck, but the local NAPA store says that's wrong. They are telling me that APP764 is the correct plug for my truck. One computer database is contradicting another and I don't know which to believe.
I've already sent an email to Autolite asking for an explanation, but who knows how long it will take for a response - if ever.
..."Previously, the 764 was recommended, however, it was changed to the 104. Thank you for choosing Autolite Products."
That's it. No explanation of WHY they changed from the 764, to the 104.
My local Advance Auto says the 104 is not even in their computer. Pep Boys Auto parts store has the 104 listed, but they do not carry it. NAPA carries a few, but they haven't sold any lately.
It seems like everyone but the manufacturer is telling me to go with the 764. Who would you believe?
"Thank you for the e-mail regarding Autolite spark plugs for your 1997 Ford F150. We welcome the opportunity to be of service.
As previously stated according to our data, the 104 are the recommended Autolite spark plugs for the 1997 Ford F150 V8-4.6 (6) engine. You also have the option of using the AP104 platinum or the APP104 double platinum spark plugs for longer life.
You will find that changes do occur very often. This application had a change sometime in the recent past, however, you will find it listed this way in the 2002 Autolite Catalog (ASP2002) issued June 2002. You will also find that listing is currently on the website by going to www.autolite.com and selecting "Parts Catalog" then selecting a year (1997), then make (Ford Truck), then model (F150), and finally engine size V8-4.6L (6). These retailers, you have mentioned, have been notified of the changes, however, the processing of their data may not have reached your local outlets.
Apparently, the application, for the differences which you have stated below, were better suited with the 104. Any retailer or distributor catering to Autolite products should be able to order these spark plugs for you. We suggest you try the store locator on the www.autolite.com website. The store locator can provide you with retailers and distributors for a given zip code area. If you buy on-line, you may want to check with carparts.com cskauto.com, rockauto.com, or wrenchead.com for the availability of these spark plugs. If no retailer will order these spark plugs for you, then we recommend you contact customer service at (800) 890-2075 and select '1' on the first menu and '3' on the second menu. They can assist you with this issue further.
Thank you for choosing Autolite Products.

Then go with the OEM Motorcraft.. I can't remember the number.. just call yur local dealer parts place and get the # then shop around for the best price. they are a lil pricey for the plat plus but they will last. The regular plugs won't do.
Make sure you use a Ford Spec'd spark plug. I used an aftermarket product and had nothing but trouble. The diameter on the ford spark plug matches the ignition wires. I had a smaller daiameter NGK plug and had shorts on 5 of my 8 wires and needed to replace them all!!
