Has anyone come across the Rotella T Multigrade CI-4 and the (NEW) Rotella T Multigrade with Triple Protection(TM) Technology? Any thoughts? Doing a lot of investigating and can only see that it's for the new, stricter emissions. Ok to still use with the older engines needing the use of the added levels of zinc, phosp., etc?
Tried to access their MSDS sheets and that's down on the site and has been for 2 days now..Weird... The PDS shets give some info, but not what I'm looking.
The new CJ-4 oils, such as the latest Rotella T and Delo 400 LE mainly have reduced TBN to lower sulfated ash content. The ZDDP dose is still there, maybe reduced a tiny bit. Since ULSD fuel does not produce nearly the amount of sulfuric acid as the old diesel fuel, TBN can safely be reduced, lowering the ash content, which is better for cats. This actually makes the CJ-4 oils better for gasoline engines than before.
The CI-4+ oil is just old stock on the shelves. Chevron and SOPUS are not making any CI-4+ oils just CJ-4 which can be used in all diesel engines old or new.
I was also concerned about the CI-4 to CJ-4 change regarding the zinc content for flat tappet cam engine, as I just broke in a new flat tappet cam and want to protect it.
I contacted Shell and they informed me that the zinc level in CJ-4 spec oil has been slightly reduced to 1200 parts per million, down from 1400 parts per million in the CI-4 spec oil. They indicated that the CJ-4 spec oil still offers 3-5 times the antiwear package as current gasoline only oils, so it's fine to continue use.
They confirmed that the CI-4 oil will no longer be made and it's limited to remaining stock.
Exact quote from shell follows for anyone interested:
"With the introduction of the API CJ-4 formulation, the zinc content in Shell Rotella T Multigrade Oils has been reduced slightly from about 1400 ppm to about 1200 ppm. Even at these slightly decreased levels, Shell Rotella T Multigrade Oils still have 3 to 5 times the amount of these anti-wear additives as some current gasoline-only engine oils. These levels of zinc should continue to offer good protection in flat tappet applications.
