Last week I went to AutoZone and bought a "moly" grease. "Moly" gotta be good! Repacked the front wheel bearings on 97 2WD. Job done.
Now I am learning there are 2 ratings for automotive grease, G for wheel bearings and L for chassis. G divides further, GA, GB and GC. Likewise, LA and LB. The highest rating is GC and LB.
I used LB grade grease on wheel bearing. Bad choice. And the wheel has disc brake. That's worse.
I should have chosen a grease marked GC-LB, a multi-grade that meets both requirements. I gotta do the job again.
molly is a good impact grease. Lets say you have a bulldozer and the blade pins need greased.. THey take a lot of impact.. good place for moly. For the wheel bearings you want a good strong grease that wont wash out. Normally is is a lithium type grease , and you want high temp due to the brake location... go to Auto Zone and they will have a quart tub marked "wheel bearing grease" for manually repacking.
Did you use the Ford Lincoln approved Valvoline Moly grease??? That will be fine for the wheel bearings and its all we use at work and no issues its a Lithium 12-Hydroxysterate EP Grease. Ford spec's M1C75 which is what the Valvoline grease is.
Mystik JT-6, Hi Temp grease is excellant to use in wheel bearings and universial joints. I only have one gun and use it in my suspension parts as well.
Despite what Ford says, I would never put Moly in wheel or any bearings.
