When I pay my taxes, if the mileage on the vehicle is high, I can get a tax break by claiming "High Mileage" on the vehicle.
I was wondering what's the average mileage per year that is considered to be good number for vehicles? I heard that 12,000 miles is a good number, but I don't know.
It used to be 12000 was average at least that is what they told me every time I would try to trade in something. But now I'd say its 15000.(I put 20000 Plus ) According to the rides on local lots that are supposed to have low mileage. I even think that the federal is higher than 12000 miles. But its a good question
Nowadays vehicles seem to get 15K - 18K per year for the first 3 years and then usage tapers off over the remaining years. But I know a lot of work trucks get 25K on the low usage ones per year. My old truck got about 3K last year.
I bought my truck last April and it had 72k. I had an extended comute for most summer (50 miles one way) and I'm at 89k. So, I put on 17k. My Mom uses her car for her job and she puts on an easy 20k a year.
I'm pretty sure the "national average" has been raised from 12k to 15k. I get that tax break here in SC too.....but I never asked them what they used to figure it. Insurance companies use somewhere between 7 and 10k to give you a break in auto insurance. Most auto leases now are 15k a year.
