Within a year or so I am looking to upgrade my current truck (Regular cab, short bed '97 F150 4.6L Auto 4x4...Gutless pig) to a Regular cab, '07 F350 V10 4x4. (IMHO the '08's are Fugly!) Im just trying to get some research done now...
Does anyone have the 6-speed behind the V10? How do you like it? Smooth? Any common problems? What's the tow rating with the V10 manual vs. the Torqshift?
All I've ever owned were automatics. The 4R70W in my F150 just sucks IMO. Gears are way too tall, it's always in too high of a gear. Of course, 3.55 gears and 33" tires don't help either.
And yes, I can drive a manual just fine...I've just never owned one.
I had a 04' F-350,4x4, SC, V-10, 6-speed, DRW w/4:30 gears,,I really liked it, pulled very well, best mpg I ever calc. though was 11.6, it had 27k on it when,,,,,, On 1/6/06, I traded it in on a 06' F-350 6.0 TS auto,,this truck, and the TS has been great ,,I guess it all depends if you wanna shift it or not,,almost 22k on the 06' already,,,very happy with it !,,,,,,,Mark
I agree with m350 about the shifting. You have to like and want to shift all of the time. My truck is an auto and i've never thought about getting a manual simply because when I am driving the truck it's one less thing to have to do or think about. I have a Stang with a 5 speed for when I have that itch to shift, and that's where I like to keep it. My next truck with the King Ranch is all about comfort and no shifting necessary. Put it in D and go........ but you know, to each his own. I've heard nothing negative about the manuals.
The torqueshift transmission with a V-10 and the 4.10 or 4.30 rear gears will be anything but gutless. Drive one, put your foot into it, you will be amazed.
Also, towing ratings will be higher with the automatic. F-250, V-10 with 4.10 gearing, GCWR with a manual is 20000 lbs, with a torqueshift it is 21000 lbs.
For some reason, the 6-speed manual tow rating is exactly 1,000 lbs less than the 5-speed TorqShifts. I would go lower than the 3.73:1 axle ratio, so you have plenty of power for that big hill or can upsize tires without any problems.
For some reason, the 6-speed manual tow rating is exactly 1,000 lbs less than the 5-speed TorqShifts.
For some reason, this is the case on the F-350, but not on the F-250 or F-450, at least according to my pdf of the '08 brochure. The 07's may well be different.
I am very happy with the 6 speed in my '08. Though I rarely tow- and haven't yet with this truck, I find the truck almost doesn't care which gear I am in.
You do need to give this transmission time to break in-a brand new one can be stiff shifting and i found that 2nd gear occasionally needed to be double-clutched during the first 300-400 miles. It's getting slicker day by day, and I'm one of the 39%'ers that prefer a stick. If you love to drag race other vehicles, though, get the auto as the 1st to 2nd shift is long and wants to be treated as truck transmission. It ain't a sports car tranny.
For some reason, this is the case on the F-350, but not on the F-250 or F-450, at least according to my pdf of the '08 brochure. The 07's may well be different.
No, like I posted it is the same for the F-250, '07, '06 and '05. The Torqueshift will tow 1000 pounds more than the manual.
Thanks for the info. I don't plan on towing much....all we have is a small utility trailer rated for 3500lbs that I tow 1-2 times a month. But I want to be able to tow much more if I need to. Over the past year, nearly a dozen occasions came up where I needed to tow 8K-9K-10K, and I couldn't do it with my F150.
I know with the F150, the manual was only rated at 5k, while the auto was rated at 7.5k. I just wanted to know if the SD's trannies had a large gap between them too.
Gears will be 4.30's and Im going to try to keep the tires in the 32"-33" range. Gas mileage isn't much of a concern, as Im only getting 12-13mpg with my F150.
I go offroad often, tow my friends and my ATV's when we go riding, and some trips to the scrap yard. And whatever else comes up...
From test drving both the v10 and the 6.0 manuals - I would not get a manual in the diesel unless the truck was used for a lot of highway towing. Shifting the manual with the 6.0 allowed the 6.0 to lose all boost btwn shifts - which means slow acceleration when you have to wait for boost everytime you shift.
I have not driven a v10 with a torqueshift trans that is more broken in than on the dealer lot, but IMHO the 4R100 is a lot more sporty auto.
I have a v10 with a six speed and i love it. The fastest truck i've ever owned. Had a v8 with an auto, and the manual seems to have better throtal response then the auto. Might just be differents in trucks, dont know. Also with the auto it never shifted untill over 5000 rpms when hammering it. I shift my standerd at around 3500 to 4000. Buddy has a v8 stick and blew my auto away. Like standing still. Granted it wasn't a torqueshift, but i'll take a standered any day.
33s with a 3.55 no wonder its gutless swap some new gears and it should be a lot better but for transmissions i have heard both are good if your towing a lot the auto will be better more suited for it and you can tow more
