Won't turn over
I hope someone can help me. My son has a 92 Explorer. The starter will engage but won't turn the engine. I had him pull the starter and try it independently and he said it would kick in and spin. I also had him look at the gear teeth and he said they looked ok. I also had him try moving the ring gear with a screwdriver and he said it moved although he said he only moved it a couple teeth, then put it back together. The starter will still would engage but not turn at all. He also said the battery seems to have a good charge. Please help!
A Big Thank You in advance
First try another battery.
Try running a heavy gauge wire directly from the battery and see if it will turn the motor over. This will see if the wiring has gone bad and needs to be replaced.
Also, try pulling the plugs and see if it can turn it over. If it can and when you put the plugs back it quits working then i would say the starter is bad.
Did the explorer's electrical system give you any problems before this started?
Chris
Thank you. I'll give him a call and have him try it. I assume you mean to jump from the battery, directly to the starter? He did say that the Explorer seemed to be sluggish lately.

Thank you also. It's good to know about that switch. Would that prevent it from even turning over though?
When I had the same problem on my Ranger I simply added a jumper cable between the positive post on the battery & the starter relay. Still would'nt crank.
Added the cable between the negative post of the battery & the engine block & it fired right up, so I knew that the negative cable was shot.
