I installed a Luk clutch kit in my 93 F350 with the IDI 7.3 motor. The clutch works very well, but I now have a new problem with starting. Sometimes, when I try to start the engine, the starter won't fully engage. It seems that the starter gears and the flywheel gears hit teeth to teeth, preventing the starter from engaging, and the starter then cannot spin. When this happens, you can rock the truck in gear by hand, then the starter will engage and start the engine.
I am not that familiar with the LUK system, does it come with a new flywheel? What moved when you installed the clutch? The flywheel should not have moved from original position. Was there something on the new clutch assembly that is sometimes interferring with the starter engaging?
The Luk clutch is a solid flywheel that replaces Ford's two piece 'dual mass' flywheel. We replaced the flywheel, clutch & pressure plate.
The clutch works very well, only problem is the occasional starter glitch.
sounds like shiming or the new flywheel has new theeth on it wich arent wore like yar old one or is of a slightly diffrent size. id play around with shimming it. unless ya can see some obstruction that prevents the starter form engaing all the way.
I too had this problem and was told by LUK that you have to have the OEM starter, not an aftermarket one or they will have alignment problems. Mine smacked into the teeth on the flywheel and wouldn't engage. With a rebuilt OEM starter, no problem.
