Was the welting used only on pre 70's trucks? Not sure I've seen it on the Flareside models after the 50's models.
The welting was not used on the rear fenders of the '53 to ''56 Ford Trucks. I think this is just something that the parts dealers sell for guys that want to customize their trucks. As I said before I have never seen rust breaking out in this location, nor do I hear squeeks from the fenders.
Ford put the welting there for several reasons. It keeps water from entering between the fender and the bedside. It also prevents the metal from rubbing together. That will cause paint chips and squeeking.
Ford NEVER put fender welting on the 56 REAR fenders! They came with what I call dum dum its a plyable putty like silly putty they called it anti-squeek.
This was used between EVERY panel that touched another metal panel.
They sell welting and say its for 53-56 ford trucks and it will work but it never came with it on the rear fenders , just the anti-squeek is shown in the body assembly manual for 56's
If it's alright to add my $ 0.02 worth, I watched the TV program Cut, Chop Rebuild and on a 34 coupe they sprayed LineX to eliminate the welting for a clean look and that it did. I suppose you could use any bed liner product to the desired thickness. Not my idea but think it's a good one.
I got some from LMC truck. Really cheap, a few bucks per roll. Rubber, perfectly matches the front fender stuff. Was planning on the weatherstrip route, but this was cooler and cheaper.
