I have a 04 F350 with a 6.0. I have installed a K&N air intake and a superchips tuner. I think the tuner helped the fuel economy some but I was told it bypasses the engines warning systems. Is that true? The K&N sure sounds cool but I believe it actually decreased my fuel mileage. Of course my local mechanic of course said I should not use either. What have you guys done to get the best bang for the buck without causing engine damage.

Lose the A/M air intake. The OEM Dondaldson air intake is the best filtration on the market and provides more air than the engine can use until you get to 500+RWHp. Also the K&N is just about the worst air intake/filtration system available for the 6.0, and the dusting of turbo's do to its use is not uncommon.

The Superchips tuner is not bad, just that the factory canned programms are a comprimise.

The best tuner for the 6.0 is the SCT XcalII with "custom tunes" from Matt (PSD 60L Fx4) at LIPD or Eric at Innovative
www.lidiesel.com
http://ophion.site5.com/~dieselta/store/

The other advantage to the SCT XcalII, you can turn off your EGR valve, and run a custom tune written for your truck, load and driving style. If you change your performance needs you can get another custom tune written by Matt or Eric and they just email it to you.

I noticed in your other post, you had an EGR cooler and Oil cooler failure. With the SCT XcalII and the EGR turned off, you can install and EGR delete up-pipe and then the hot exhaust gasses no longer enter the motor and the EGR cooler is no longer a problem and the engine runs cooler, extending the life of the oil cooler.

Also do the Rear Fuel crossover line.
Both the EGR up-pipe delete and the Fuel Crossover line can be purchased from Matt at LIPD. Give him a call he can set you up. Also if you end up needing headgaskets, Install ARP studs as a minimum and if you are going to do very many perfromance mods you may want to consider "fire ring" head gaskets also. Again Matt has all this, he can answer all your questions.

Hope this helps.

stock intake. sct xcal2. everyone swears their life by it. I've read testimonials of people jumping 4mpg. various other mods you can do. oil bypass, coolant bypass, intake elbow. I mean..the list is LONG. I don't think as many people know about sct as they do edge or bully dog or banks because to use sct you have to actually know about your truck and understand what is good and bad for it. at least that was the case with me. didn't know squat until I started visiting the forums. unplugged my edge shortly after. good luck.

Wow, thanks for the information guys. I wish I would have found you guys before I started spending money on the wrong stuff. I'll start with the EGR delete up pipe. I'm thinking not running exhaust back into your engine is a good thing. Less heat less friction......I'm thinking the coolant filter is a wise purchase as well. The fuel line also seems very reasonable. As for the head gaskets and studs I think the wise decision is to wait until the originals fail. Luckily I saved my original intake so I'll put that back on. Should I ditch the super chips or hang on to it? Thanks again..

The Superchips is not bad, it just is not as customizeable as the SCT XcalII, since it just has one size fits all canned tunes. If you drive smart with it you should be alright. If you have the money, and want the best, then go with the SCT XcalII with "custom tunes" from Matt or Eric.
