My Fuel mileage on my F350 6.0 seems to have decreased after I had a K&N installed 2 years ago. I have been trying to find out if the filter is at fault. Now I see that K&N has a whole new design for the 6.0 filter. When mine was installed the honeycomb filter was cut out of the housing and the K&N inserted. I cleaned it regularly but no change in fuel mileage.
Anyone else have any issues with a K&N?
There have been some issues with the K&N drop in filters not doing so well in a turbo charged engines. On the 7.3 there were problems with it not fitting in the box properly, but if the filter is not properly maintained, it will allow dust to pass through and can dust the turbo or even the engine. It would be a good idea to pull the intake hose off the turbo and inspect the wheel for any signs of abrasion or damage. If you see any dirt in the intake hose, or if the edges of the fins don't look straight and sharp, then it's time to switch filters ASAP.
I changed it out today and put in a wix Ford type honeycomb filter to see if the fuel mileage will increase. The hose was clean, in fact last week a Ford dealer replaced the turbo as it was not working as it should. No mention about dirt or dust in it. I thought that maybe the bad turbo was causing the bad fuel mileage but there is no change since the new turbo was put in.
Those guys know more about the 6.0 motor and associated components. Make sure to tell them what year truck, how many miles, and what the mileage used to be compared to what it is now.
