alright, we live in a second floor apartment with a small balcony on it, my wife put out there a bird feeder for birds but it attracted the squirrels also.
now the stupid squirrels dig and eat our plants we have sitting on the balcony, they really attacked this morning eating all of the carrots, lavender and digging in and around other things and smashing down any other plant while crawling over them.
past shooting them which the neighbors and the city wouldn't really appreciate, or poisoning, which i think is cruel, what non-lethal way can i keep these things from digging up and eating our plants?
My Mother has been a bird person my whole life. She has battled squirrels for as long as I remember.
She has taught me one thing, squirrels are like weeds, you can't get ride of them. She has added feeders/food that the squirrels love. This has created a balance in her backyard for years.
Put out a couple of ears of corn, as far away from your plants as you can get it. It may take them away, but eventually the squirrels will go for that and leave your plants alone. The cayenne and water idea is a good one, too. It will help "train" the pests away from what you don't want them eating up.
i am not a big fan of killing animals unless they are a danger to society or for food, besides that, the neighbors, aprartment manager, and the police would not be a fan of me blasting away with a gun some squirrels, besides, i don't own a 22 and not planing on buying one for it, but thanks for the tips.
i will use the pepper thing and see how that works.
Go to the local tractor supply, buy a live trap, bait with apple, peanuts, peanut butter or what ever you find that works, then dispose of them as you see fit.
Our elderly neighbors have been vigilantly trying to eliminate squirrels from their yard. The thing is that they have bird feeders. They want the birds, not the squirrels.
The old guy has 2 Have-a-Heart traps he baits with peanut butter (which really does work), but he only takes the trapped critters a few blocks away to release them. Squirrels have at least a 5 mile radius that they live in from what I have researched. I'm thinking he should spray paint the suckers before he releases them to see if the same culprits are returning! It really is a hoot to watch!
Try putting chicken wire over your plants (not very attractive, but it should keep fruits, veggies and herbs safe)
In any case, good luck. Personally, I love to watch the squirrels in action. They can be very entertaining
