One thing to remember is that the later models (76?- 79) had nice things like front disc brakes.
I also thought that cabs were lengthened at some point in this era, but don't quote me on that.

I wish the truck sales market was like that here in North Dakota, because it would make me feel really good to know that the truck I just bought, '79 F150 with a new 460, Holley 650, fuel pump, water pump, filters, battery, cam, tonneu cover, & frame off restore 10 years ago (only 67k on it total!) for $3750 could make some real cash if I ever sold it. Hope everything works out for you. I agree with previous posts of Southern California trucks being nice and fairly abundant.
