This is my first of hopefully many posts. I have just began my search for a 1971 thru 1979 shrortbed 4X2 F-100. I'm looking to gather as much insight as possible that may help in my decision. I'm not really set on any particular year yet, just something in that range and style. Its been pretty exciting the last week or so, since the wife gave me the go ahead to look. I'm in no big hurry to buy, I just want to find a nice Summer driver (I'm from NW PA) that is solid. My goal it to have something buy next summer. My price range goal is around $5000-$6000. I'm willing to travel south to find one. What condition of truck can I expect to get for this amount?
I live in Clearfield county and just finding a 2x4 in any condition is fun (4x4 land). But I hope you find what you want. Go around Harrisburg ,YORK,Williamsport , Danville , area there are still solid truck to be found there. This is where I've been getting my last few projects.
Try to find the Auto Locater sales mag (Like truck/auto trader) or go to www.auto-locater.com its covers central Pa to the east coast basically . Might give you the lead you need. Also Ford and truck Carlise is tomming up they might have some there.
A guy I work with suggested Carlilse, he is a big mopar freak and said the mopar show is really big, I see I just missed the all Ford show.
My wife works for an auto auction and they just had (3) 78-79's run through their classic sale, a white 78 F-100 4x2 sold for $4200, a black 79 F-250 4x2 sold for $13,800, and an orange 78 F-150 4X2 did not sell. I have seen both the white and black one here at a local dealership, the white one was solid but it had too much going on for me, (with a windshield visor, white panted grill & bumper to match, chrome bed rails, poorly tinted windows, and the interior did'nt match the exterior, and a poor wheel selection). I pretty much want a stock truck with some nice wheels. With a little work I could make it work, but I'm just not ready to jump yet. The black one was a long bed and really really nice, but that price seems really high, and those are wholesale prices not yet marked up by the dealer.
I'm in NW Pa, Just picked up a 78 Supercab. If you're going to drive in the winter around Dreary Erie and NW Pa, you'll want 4wd especially with a pickup.
Ah, but once you start driving one of these old jewels,,,,, you won't want to park it in the winter!! And being from Missouri, and being transplanted out here in California, I have to say, some of the best trucks I have bought are from Southern Cali, and my last one my 77 from Fresno, so dry, absolutely NO RUST!
I really like this truck and I have emailed the seller and he said he has a guy coming from tennesee to get it today for $8500. More than I want to spend but its a nice truck.
That truck on e-bay is gross!! pathetic he is trying to pass that off as a frame off resto,,,, that is so much crap, just look closely at it, it is NOT a nice truck,,,, If you want to fly to Socal, you could buy one easily for under 5g's and drive it home. Hell, if you want to spend 7500 I'll sell you my 77!!
It's in Morenci, AZ, sitting in front of the local grocery store.
If anyone wants, I'll get the phone number and more info.......
Here's what I do know......
F100 Custom SWB Styleside, 302, C6, dealer or aftermarket A/C, door panels and dash pad pretty well trashed, otherwise looks to be in exceptional shape. All 4 hubcaps are still there even.

Your right, if you look at the underside shots it does kinda look like he just painted it with a can of black spray paint. This is why I'm in no hurry to buy, I just started looking and I've got a lot to learn. I plan on hitting some of the bigger area car shows to get a feel for what to look for.
The white 78 F-100 that sold at auction for $4200 on friday was sold yeterday when I called about it and they said they got $6900 out of it. I also looked at anotherone last night, it was an orange 78 F-150 long bed and they were asking $7000 for it. Not a nice truck. Interior was awful and the "restoration" was not up to par for what I want. Prices may be a bit high here in the snow belt.
