The windings in the starter could have some oil built up on them or they are melting down. You can pull it out and take it to a chain autoparts store to have them test it for sure though. A replacement isn't that expensive since there are millions of these engine around. Worse case you will need to replace the starter and power wire going to it. Maybe even sacrifice some skin on the exhaust...

Also, It can overheat when there is too much drag from trash on Cyls, lack of oil, etc caused by sitting over time.

I'd yank the plugs, blow a few drops (1/8th T-spoon max) Marvels Mystery Oil in the cyls and see how it cranks over that way (oiled up & with the plugs removed. I'd even crank it over like that until I developed some Oil Pressure to pre-lube all the moving internal engine parts before I fired it up dry. . .

BTW, don't look in plug holes while cranking it over if you don't want a face full of oil.

I've seem starters with water in them from sitting. Is it wire smoke or steam? Could well be full of spiders and other things. I'd pull the starter and dismantle it and clean it than do as FordBoypete suggested.

I think ya would need ta run it a while to get a good reading. But if ya have any than that is a good sign. The more ya spin and run it the better it should get. Remember to change the oil and filter a couple of time after getting it runing to get the rust and sludge out.

FordF100Man,
Artic Y's right,
Any +PSI when cranking will prelube it. Changing Oil & Filter a couple times & coolant once after a good Hot run in too are great ideas. I do it.

I also place a piece of corrugated to block the radiator then I run the temp up to just below the boiling point, B4 I remove the corrugated & let it cool back down. That heat up helps to loosen stuff, when you drain fluids they take trash with them on way out,
FWIW

Anyhow that's how I prep a "sitter". You ought to flush out the Hydraulic fluid also 1st chance you get. You do that by bleeding system from farthest point from the M'cyl until it runs clear & clean. Then work your way forward & closer til you get to L/F wheel cyl. . . . . $10 worth of Br Fluid now, early on, can pervent $100s in repairs a little later.

Yea i just drained the oil for the first time and some sluge came out, then i dumped some fresh oil in it and started it for the first time and found out that i had some gas leaks, all of the gaskets in the carbs are bad so i have to find replacement ones but it kinda sucks cause my 302 engine had dual 4 barrel holley carbs so i got to find some gaskets for them. Plus when i drained the oil a lot of water came out to from sitting for a long time. But hopefully i can get everything fixed up, i really want to drive it.

But thanks for your guys help.

I would really triple check out that water in the oil business, that doesn't sound right or good. . . . . That's not a common or usual thing caused by just sitting. Something else has got to be wrong in there.
Could be anything from a bad head or intake gasket to a cracked block or head. . . .

Personally I'd start with the intake gaskets or intake manifold as the source.

Yea when i ran the truck it sounded good plus my dad said that can happen from sitting outside for 8 years and there is a big hole cut out in the hood so it isent to hard for rain to get in.

Hopefully the water came from the hole in the hood. Overhaul the carb and run it some more. If the oil turns milky ya prolly got a bad gasket or a crack. like Fordf100man said.
