I think they are about 8 inches deep, six inches in height.
They only came on longbeds, but recalling things from high school, (ummmm this was part of a class project on volume of geometric shapes), an 18 pack, a 12 pack, and a bag of ice would fit in one comfortably (all removed from packaging). There's quite a bit of room in them
Somewhere there's a 77 F250 running around with a drain valve put on the bottom of the box - if found, I'll make an offer for my old truck!
I have an extra bed with a toolbox built in the driver side of the bed is no good but if you were wanting to try to graft one in this might be an option PM me if you want more info
The 1961/72 F Series Stylesides offered two toolboxes, both for the right side. One for short beds, one for long. It could be ordered with the truck, or as an over the counter accessory kit.
The 1973/79 side mounted toolbox was only available on the Stylesides with a 133" wheelbase (long bed). It was on the option list, so the truck could be ordered with one from the factory. I couldn't find a part number for an over the counter accessory toolbox kit..did Ford offer one? Dunno.

I've seen an add-on job, but don't know if it was exclusive to Fords (Bill's post just got me to thinking)....Someone, at some time, made a fiberglass insert that went in the side, and attached with an aluminum perimeter ring and a couple dozen pop rivets.
I've seen a couple in boneyards, and on old Type II (straight van) ambulances.

Might be time to do some hunting!
I just went hunting, and here's what I found. The 1961/89 Econolines didn't offer any side mounted toolboxes according to the four parts catalogs I have that cover these models...but
In the Iconografix publication, The Illustrated History of the American Ambulance (on FTE one needs all the refs one can find, I also have a book on Hearses), Superior Coach converted 1969/74 Econolines to ambulances keeping the original sheetmetal intact. The various pictured ambulances have several doors on the left side. They appear to be about 2 feet long, 1 foot high. The book also says the 69/74 Econolines were the first vans from any manufacturer converted to ambulances in the US.

Grafting one in would be like repairing with a patch panel. You would have to cut out the section and place it in your current bed. If you are handy at body work, it wouldn't be that much trouble. I guess if I wanted one and had to do some work to a bed anyway, it wouldn't be that tough of a project. I can't see cutting the side of my bed if it didn't already need some work.
Slightly off the subject, but a buddy of mine was saying he met a dude that installed a track with a slide out BBQ into one of those boxes. I think that's brilliant, and have been thinking about doing the same to mine, or at least build a removable one...

A slide out removable B-B-Q grille...now that's just the ticket. However, I can just imagine if the grille isnt removable what will happen. Not only will the meat be singed, but the paint, too.
I added the tool box to my truck, its not hard to do but it measures 30" long, 10" high. The ABS plastic tub goes back to 1 1/2" from the frame and has a metal band around it that bolts to the bed floor. The race lower race trac molding that goes on it is rare and weather strip couldnt be found but i used surgical tubing instead. i added a pic to the gallery of the hole in the bed side

Hey NumberDummy I always wondered how popular these where on new trucks back in the correct time span.Do you remeber many new trucks on your lot or getting many requests for them (orders) back in the 70's at your dealership. What would you guess 1 in every 20 new trks had em ?Thanks
