1st, you need two keys that the truck already recognizes in order to program a 3rd, 4th, etc. Only one recognized key gets you nowhere on your own.

2nd, the tumblers are just mechanical bits that the PATS doesn't know anything about. It only cares about the little chip in the key, so if your truck doesn't know the chip in a particular key, it needs to be reprogrammed.

So, If I only have one key and dont want to go to the dealership. Can I hook my laptop up to the truck and program the truck to accept the new key?

No you can't hook up your lap top.
You have to have the Ford diagnostics to do it.
Their latest version is on a lap top that uses a VCM (Vehicle Communication Module) to interface between the lap top and the vehicle computer through the data link connector.
