I am looking to purchase a blank key that I can program using the PATS Key System for my 2007 F150. Where can I find one and has anyone used the programming method? Does it work? Etc. Any information would be great. THANKS in advance.
Thanks obxredneck, I had already read that. I was just wondering where the best place to get one was and also if anyone had tried the method on the article. How much do one of them keys cost? Cheaper then buying a dealership made key?
I paid $25 for the key at the dealership when I purchased my truck. They said if I didn't buy it right then it would cost around $75 or some outrageous price later.
I also programmed the key using the procedure in the owners manual and it worked.
My dealership just did 2 for me for free so I am not sure what they cost there now but about a year ago it was about 30 a key for an excursion I think. Yes that method does work it was the same method the dealership had used. I am about to order a bunch for all of our F150's and eBay has been the cheapest place I have found them.
and by any chance do you know if you only have to have one working key to program the blank ones? I was looking on Ebay and this one seller states that you have to have 2 working keys to program blank ones. Doesn't make sense to me because his procedure states imput the first program key then the second and then the blank one. Well wouldn't it be the same thing inputting the programmed key, taking it out and entering the same programmed key, then the blank one? The truck ain't going to know the difference.

Yes, you need 2 programed keys to program another.

Actually, the truck will know the difference. You see, you aren't actually programming the keys to recognize the truck--you are programming the truck to recognize the keys. As a security measure during the programming procedure, the truck will require at least two of the keys it already recognizes to be inserted. Only then will it permit a new key to be added to its list of "acceptable" keys.
The technology behind the keys is based on RFID (radio frequency identification). Each key has a code embedded in a chip, and this code cannot be changed. Upon startup, the truck emits a signal that energizes the chip in the key, and the key responds with its embedded code. If the truck recognizes the key's code, then the key will start the truck. I also purchased my extra PATS key through eBay, and my dealership cut it for free the next time I went in for service.
Yes you have to have 2. I dont know how it all works inside the key but you need 2 so somebody cant steal your key and make a copy. They would have to have both your keys to make a copy. If you only have one then you have to take it to the dealer and get them to redo the keys. I bought my truck from the dealership and it only had one key and I had to bring it back so that they could get me another key and redo the security codes on both.
Thanks, so I only have one key, What are your suggestions or do I not have options for spares?
Your going to have to go to the dealer and pay between $100-150. From what Ive been told it takes atleast 45 min to program a key. (when you only have one)
You need 2 keys to program the PATS key; otherwise you have to take the truck to a locksmith who will access the truck computer with his computer. Cost could be $100. The best place to purchase the PATS key is on ebay, then anyone can cut it for you. I've done it 2 or 3 times with no problem. If you only have 1 key, shop around for the best price to program the PATS key; you will be surprised how much the price will vary!
Ok . I understand that if I have only one key I will need to get another key made, but what I have new ignition tumblers with new keys that match. Would I need to reprogram the PATS system. Would the car start with the new tumbler?
