Ok, so it takes two keys on the PATS II system to program a third; question is this: You have one key, the 2nd is presumed with the former owner. You purchase 2 new keys, have them cut to match. Now, the dealer can program these keys, but, will the missing original key still work? Or can the dealer reprogram the PATS so that only the three keys in hand will work?
From what I have been able to find out, I am assuming each key has a unique code, and PATS is programmed to recognize it; in other words it is not the key being programmed. Is this an accurate assumption? Anyone know for sure?
Your correct. It will only store the code of the keys that have been programmed. The only problem is that the previous owner can still get into the vehicle.
When you have the keys programmed, make sure to tell them to erase all the previous programming, and then reprogram all three of your keys.. this will prevent the key that the original owner has from starting the vehicle.
Unless you tell them otherwise, they will just ADD the new keys to the keys already programmed in... it shouldn't cost you any more, as it only take a few seconds, once they get into your security system.
The IDS or WDS erases old programs automatically. The only keys that will work are the 2 that you have reprogrammed. If you want to be completely safe, order new lock cylinders and have them installed with a seperate key so as to keep the previous owner out of the vehicle....
Actually.. no it doesn't automatically erase them... at least not a year ago when I used the WDS... IDS might be different.
And it takes 11 minutes... 10 minutes to wait to get security access... then about ten seconds a key afterwards... but most dealerships charge about 1/2 hour anyway.
