The 6.4 PSD requires a minimum of 45 cetane rating according to the video. Most stations are rated at a minimum of 40. Did the 6.0 have the same requirement? Will running 40 cetane fuel cause problems?
No one else has reported any problems. The vidoe also conviently mentions that Ford sells cetane booster at the dealership. Wonder what a real world tech can tell us or if it would effect hp/tq of engine.
ASTM D975 ULSD fuel is required to have a minimum of 40 cetane, while the ASTM D613 specifies a minimum of 43 cetane. Running lower cetane rating will result in increased white smoke at start up and increased engine noise. Best way to be safe for cetane #'s and lubricity is to run a fuel additive with every tank full. Use DK Power Service or Stanadyne or one of the other diesel fuel additives that contains No Alcohol. DK is a popular choice for the 6.0 and should work equally well in the 6.4L.

It was said that the 6.0 was designed for optimum performance at 48 cetane. Not a requirement though.....

Nothing new. My uncle is a mechanic at a school bus company and they have a few short buses with 7.3' s. International said the same thing about the 7.3, 45 minimum cetane. They had samples tested by a lab from all the stations around and did not find one that had a cetane of 45 or more. This was with LSD by the way. Couldn't tell ya what ULSD is, but just to be on the safe side, I run Diesel Kleen in every tank as does the bus company.
As blackhat mentioned the DK has been a popular additive for the 6.0 and seems to help with mileage, power lag, etc. Question I have for the 6.4 is; how sensitive is the Particulate Filter to certain additives? and will these additives cause more frequent regens?
Also, is there any way to do a simple test for cetane with out involving a lab?

If you look on the bottle of DK there is a sticker that says ULSD compliant. In order to use a fuel additive in a 6.4L or any 2007 diesel engine the additive must be ULSD compliant.
I know of no easy cetane test that a consumer could perform.
