Question AIS filterminder problem

I installed an AIS Severe Duty Intake in my 2001 7.3L PSD, and the filterminder showed restriction. I put the filterminder from the stock airbox on the AIS, and it doesn't show restriction! What gives? Do I have restriction or not? The two filterminders have different part numbers; (F81A-9N622-AA for stock unit; 2U2J-9N622-AA for the unit on the AIS). The unit on the AIS has a plug for an additional sensor that my truck does not have (restrictor indicator cable?). Has anyone seen this problem? The vendor says he would be real surprised if the AIS is causing restrictions, since I have minimal mods (4" turboback MBRP exhaust). I'm familiar with the foam fender sleeve option, and will go this route if necessary, but I'd rather not drill a hole in a perfectly good (new) airbox at this point. If it's giving restriction right off the bat, then I'd say there is a design flaw. I'm hoping it's just a defective filterminder giving me a bad reading. Any feedback would be great. Thanks.

Get ahold of "Filter Minder" www.filterminder.com and talk to there tech support, i am guessing you have a defective filter minder.

Hope this helps

Toss the one that came with it away, unless your truck has the elctronic plug to plug into it. We always do the femder sleeve option when we install them for better air flow.

Why would you throw away the filter minder? How are you going to know when to change the filter?

Oh okay. But unless the one that came with the AIS kit is defective it should work just fine as it was designed for the 7.3L motor.

As for plugging the hole how would you know when to change the Donaldson Powercore filter?

Your old plug will work just the same. The filter minders on these trucks are not that great to start with. I change mine, knowing the road conditions I drive in-no dust, every 30-40K miles. Yours may vary.

Well i will disgree with your statments on filter minders, they have been used for years on off highway and heavy equipment with great success and work very well. Both Donaldson and FMC recommend changing the Powercore filter based on the filter minder only. Here is a link to the filter minder website for more info on them.

Here is a recent post by BowTieHtr with respect to the Donaldson Powercore filter and the 6.0 & 6.4 engines. It was a FMC broadcast bulliten.

You are basing your data on the company that makes them! That is your choise.

From my own personal experience those thing never worked correctly on Turbo Charged Engines. You can do some research and see how many people just ignore them.

They have worked exceptionally well for many years on Turbo charged off road and heavy equipment. I did not base my data on personal experience or the filter minders advertising. This is based on years of working on and around Turbo charged Off road and heavy equipment. In addition FMC and Donaldson both support the filter minders use.

Most people ignore them because they don't understand how they work or how air flow works. They go off old wives tales and shade tree mechanic theory without looking at the real world testing. Sorry but ignoring or not using something you do not understand does not make them useless.

Out here in the marine industry we use filter minders. We also use filter restriction as a basis for fuel and lube oil changes. We run large Cat diesels with both electronic controls and mechanical.
Definitely not junk.

Thanks for all the input, guys. I put the AIS airbox filter minder back in and it's drawing down, showing restriction. The helpful guy (Brian) at Diesel Power Products who sold me the unit believes the filter minder is probably defective, and is sending another one. He indicated he has sold many of these intakes and filter restrictions on a mildly modified engine is rare indeed. I'm inclined to believe these gauges work but it is always possible to get a bad one.
