hey guys i was lookign at a bed today. the wheel wells seemed to be moved back about 8 inches compared to normal 73-79 beds. I also noticed the passengerside the whole side almost whole way back to the wheel well up to the body like (where the chrome does) opens up and there is a big area inside like a toolbox or spare tire place. (you know in between the inside bedside and outside bedside) also the inside bedside is not like a normal bedside it is inside fauther (for more riim between the bedsides). it all looks factory. what kind of bed is this? what will it fit? its in mint shape and i can buy it.
thanks,
jimmy
ps how easy are they to sell?
I don't know too much about these, but they are called a Camper Special I think. The hole in the side of the bed is for a spare tire. They made the trucks with the axle located further back to even out the weight of slide in campers. At least that is the way I understand it. Not sure which years they made them, but I know that I have seen very few of them. Someone else that has more info will probably shed more light on the subject.
It is a F350 single wheel extended wheelbase bed, made right from 73-79. Early on in the vintage they called them supercamperspecial. It had a Dana 70 rear, narrow frame w/ narrow springs, just like a cab/chassis dually, and big front brakes. I actually saw a 1978 today in mint shape(not for sale) I was looking at a 1979 F250 supercab 4x4 for parts and he just had to show me his baby.
I had one myself but it was back in 1987 when they were still commonplace. Most of those trucks got converted to dually, and boxes were tossed.
those beds can be hard to sell because hardly anyone has those trucks, there is one in good shape in a junkyard here, has been there for at least 10 years.
Really...... I would have guessed that they would be easy to sell because of the rarity. But, I can see how they may be hard to sell, since they won't interchange on most trucks.
These beds didn't seem to have the wheelwell rot out problem that the other 73-79 beds had. I'm sure that they are rare but why bother unless they fit your truck, you may have to sit on it for a few years.
This would be the place to advertise one. If you don't need it, may as well give everybody here a heads up. I don't need 1 !! But I'm sure somebody does
i can pick it up for 300.00. its in mint shape only 2 little holes (one inside the bed on the floor about size of half dollor and one on bedside same size. it was dual tank (older style with the cap sticking threw the side of it. I live in Latrobe PA and well yeah any bed for these trucks are hard to find. This one is really nice looking. think its worth it? i wont ever be able to use it and would sell it for same prie i got it for if a member needed one. I would just like to help members out who are in need of one.
PS i thought camper specials had a smaller toolbox opening on them. (normaly only liek foot high) this one is clear up to the body line. it was kidna strange at first looking at.
Many truck editions had the smaller toolbox. The one you saw, came out only on certain camper special trucks for the spare tire. You don't see many around.
1973/79 F350 Super Camper Specials and Trailer Specials both share this bed, which was available only with the Regular Cab. The wheelbase is 140." The spare tire is behind a large door on the right side of the bed, forward of the wheel opening.
The bed was also available on certain F350 Camper Specials from 1976 thru 1979.

Hey the 1973-76 didn't have the fuel door, so its in that range.
I have never seen a bed like this on a F250, the frame is completely different. F250s were 133", 139"(SC shorty), 150" crew shortbed, and 155" supercab longbed. None of these had the narrow frame of that F350.
The only F350s with that wide frame was the Supercab longbed 155" and the 4x4 (snowfighter) at 133"
