Bare Metal

I have media blasted most of my 52 cab yesterday and have wiped it down. I have now got alot of exposed bare metal and I have been going over it today with scotch brite pads to get all the residual cleaned up. I plan on shooting it with epoxy primer soon, does anyone have good experience on how long I have before I risk getting surface rust as I would like to continue cleaning up the bad spots.

Thanks

Rust can start quick, but if you are in a dry building you have quite a bit of time to do your metal work. The best thing to do is. Do your metal work and try to get as close as possible and when it is ready, go over the entire cab with some of those 3m green rubber like discs for a angle die grinder. Then wipe it down with final kleen and just before you shoot, go over it with a tack rag. My 56 cab has been bare for almost 2 years and it only has extremely light hint of orange, wipes off with a rag. I am hopeing to have mine e coated by the end of summer.

I would prime it ASAP. You can always grind areas down later to weld patches in, you want to prevent as much flash rust as possible. As for dents, it's better to apply the filler over the epoxy primer, scuff it up a little if it has been sitting a while after being primed.

Thanks, I plan to prime the exposed area's today or tomorrow i hope, I plan also to use Por15 metal ready. There seems to be a difference in opinion on filler over epoxy primer or bare metal.wgc

What I have read lately the idea is the epoxy primer bonds better to the bare metal than the filler. I had a hard time doing this because I had always applied the filler over the roughed up bare metal. Just make sure the epoxy primer has time to dry thoroughly.

If we haven't help make up your mind check out the Paint and Bodywork forum on FTE:

I like the idea of putting it over the primer, any particular brand of epoxy primer or are they all similar. i am not sure what type of paint will be going on the body but I like Imron if I can get the right color.

Thanks

I use Martin-Seymour I get at NAPA because they're the closest to me but PPC and DuPont make good products. I'm sure there's other just as good brands out there.

I used Valspar DP-90 epoxy primer as my final coat, it's what you see as of right now. I also sprayed a different epoxy primer on it right after everything got sand blasted, and I'll be darned if I can't remember what brand it was...it's been quite a while. But, I'm fairly certain it was a PPG epoxy primer and it was a light green/blue color. When it came time for body work, I ground the primer off to the bare metal. I will end up probably painting it eventually...what else but flat black, or maybe silver....no, I'm thinking dark blue....
