If you have business files I would recommend an online backup to ensure you can recover from a disater. If it is just home documents and pics I wouldn't bother.
Two things to think about are cost and size of online storage.
I believe pricing for most of the services starts at $14.00 per month.. I see Carbonite is about $4.00 per month...
The problem I see is if your HD fails you have to reinstall windows and get an internet connection to be able to restore everything.. If you are going to do that it isn't much more to reinstall apps and have a clean install.
All you really need to backup are the files under your uer profile under documents and settings.

If credit card companies and processors who operate under at least some Federal oversight, can't keep their data safe, I don't think I would trust my data with an unregulated source accountable to noone.
If your data is valuable, then store it off site in a bank box in another city.
We use quickbooks for all our companies (23) and use a online backup service through quickbooks. You can set it to when you want everything backed up and it will do it on its own. I have it set to backup everynight at 11:00 and it will backup anything that has changed. I like it because like others have said about fires and not having to backup all my files manualy (which is alot). I can also access and download any of the files from any computer with just the id number and password.
