98 turbo 2.3l 278hp ranger?????
I was looking at the gallery page and I came accross this 98 ranger w/2.3L turbo. From what it says Jesse Warren built this truck. Does anybody know if he is on this forum? I want to do this to my 96 ranger, and I was wondering what changes I would have to do to make it work. Also I would like to know if there are any improvements to the mpg, and if it will work well on 87 octane fuel.
Any information would be much appreciated.....

The 4 cyl turbo motors have a very peaky torque curve, so they can make a lot of horsepower, but over a narrow rpm band. To me, they typically drive like they have much less horsepower because of the peaky torque curve, but some people find them quite fun because of the 'kick in the pants' when the torque curve jumps up.
Actual street performance is a function of the area under the torque curve in the rpm range you actually are driving the engine, which is why I chose to do the supercharger rather than a turbo.
All of them are using premium fuel.

Here is an example dyno graph of the supercharged 4.0:
And, here is an example dyno curve of a 2.5 Turbo (which I lifted from RPS site, its from a Ranger somewhere):
If you just look at the shapes of the torque curves, you can see what I'm talking about - the supercharged torque curve is very flat, and over 200 lb-ft by 1500 rpm. Conversely, the turbo torque curve is very peaky, and it has to run over 3200 rpm to get to 200 lb-ft, although the peak numbers are higher (but they are only higher in a ~1000 rpm band).
Since acceleration is a function of the area under the torque curve for the rpm range you are running while accelerating, and since the turbo torque curve falls down somewhat after you shift, I would expect the supercharged 4.0 to actually be faster than the turbo, even though the turbo guy would have bragging rights on the peak torque and peak horsepower numbers.

The 2.5L I put in it's place has been hanging on strong made a few 1/4mi passes at 106MPH could not get into the 12's do to a traction problem.
The latest upgrades where a big valve DP head 2277 cam ect.. Motor is making 400+ but I have not yet had a tranny withstand the power. Broke gears in the 5 speed went with a c4 and it slips the clutches. I am installing a built c4 and will run mid 11's next season at 115-118MPH. The management of the 95+ OBD2 is very superior to the OBD1 setup in the SVO's with the full tuning ability of SCT Pro racer kit HP is easy.
